Schonmal von einer Briefrutsche gehört? Ich nicht. 1883 meldete James Goold Cutler das Patent für seine Briefrutsche an. Die Idee dahinter? In den aufkommenden Hochhäusern sollte es den Herrschaften leicht gemacht werden, ihre Post loszuwerden. So wurden, oft neben den Aufzügen für die Menschen, kleine Schächte für Briefe installiert. Man konnte in jeder Etage seine Post einwerfen und sie purzelte ins Erdgeschoss, wo dann alles zentral in einem großen Briefkasten landete, der dann irgendwann geleert wurde. Sehr bequem! In Chicago, wo dieses Foto entstand, sind noch rund 360 solcher Briefrutschen in Betrieb, so behauptet Wikipedia. Diese hier gibt es im altehrwürdigen Drake Hotel. Das erste Foto zeigt den Einwurf in der achten Etage, das zweite den Briefkasten im Erdgeschoss, in dem dann alle Briefe landen. Eine ganz phantastische Erfindung!

Ever heard of a mail chute? I haven´t. In 1883, James Goold Cutler received the patent for his mail chute. The idea behind it? Houses were growing higher and higher and people in the upper floors wanted to get rid of their letters easily and without having to personally bring them down to the ground floor. Thus, often next to the elevators, little chutes running down all the floors were installed. People were able to throw in their letters on all floors and they skidded down to the ground floor, where they all landed in a big regular letterbox. Hugely convenient! In Chicago, where this picture was taken, around 360 such mail chutes are still operational, Wikipedia says. This one here is in the good old Drake Hotel.
