Ach was für eine schöne Stadt ist Bremen! In Bremen hängt dieser feine Briefkasten, den Montserrat Saborit fotografiert hat. Die ersten Briefkästen in Deutschland haben übrigens die Franzosen mitgebracht, als sie im späten 18. Jahrhundert das Rheinland besetzten (Kleine Randbemerkung: gut, dass sie nicht mehr da sind). Die Menschen fanden diese Dinger sehr nützlich und so hat man sie behalten, als die Franzosen wieder weg waren. Zunächst waren sie aus Holz, dann experimentierte man mit Gusseisen herum, später verwendete man Stahlblech und heute oft auch Kunststoff. Dieses blaue Schätzchen ist mehr als hundert Jahre alt, stammt aus der zweiten Hälfte des vorletzten (!) Jahrhunderts. Das ist doch mal Qualität. Damals waren die Briefkästen durchweg blau, später wurden sie mal rot, nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg dann durchgehend gelb. Haben wir doch wieder was gelernt heute…

Oh Bremen is such a nice city, one of the nicest we have in Germany! Bremen is where this little blue box is hanging around, sent in by Montserrat Saborit. A bit of letterbox history? The first boxes in Germany were actually brought into the country by the French when they occupied the Rhineland (I´m personally quite happy they have retreated since). People loved the letterboxes and found them very convenient, that´s why they kept them even after the French went back to La Grande Nation. The first boxes were made of wood, later people tried around with cast iron, steel and today often plastic. This fine blue box is much older than 100 years, dating back to the second half of the 19th century. That´s what I call great quality. Back then, letterboxes in Germany were mostly blue. This changed to red eventually and after World War II, they all became yellow.
